I’m on the hunt for a single player, high fantasy, first-person RPG that allows for character customization. Ever since I played TESV: Skyrim, I just haven’t found anything that compares. Most recent RPGs I’ve tried have either forced me into playing a pre-generated character that doesn’t match my desired playstyle, or they’re set in a modern or sci-fi world without any substantial magic systems. I’ve also seen a ton of MMOs filled with microtransactions or games that switch to a third-person or isometric view, which isn’t what I’m looking for. Character progression often feels shallow too. So, does anyone have any decent recommendations for first-person fantasy RPGs that focus on character creation and have a good magic system?

Morrowind and Daggerfall are classics that still hold up! They might feel dated, but they really set the foundation for RPGs. I’m really looking forward to remakes like Skyblivion, but I also want something new to dive into.
If you’re craving that high fantasy vibe, definitely check out Morrowind and Oblivion. They’ve got great mods like Tamriel Rebuilt for Morrowind and some solid DLCs for Skyrim that expand on the experience. There’s even a neat indie game called Dread Delusion that’s inspired by Morrowind. While Kingdom Come: Deliverance isn’t exactly a fantasy title, it has some RPG elements that you might enjoy. Don’t forget the Gothic series too, though they’re in third-person, they have some cool open-world exploration. If you’re open to more immersive sim-style games, Arx Fatalis plays more like an RPG and might scratch that itch for you!
Totally agree! Those games are epic, but it’s easy to yearn for the fresh shine of newer titles. Remakes always tickle the nostalgia in a good way.
