Looking for Games Where You Start as an Underdog and Become a Powerful Figure

-

I’m searching for games that really capture that journey of going from a small underdog to a powerful figure, something similar to experiencing a dramatic rise like Paul Atreides from Dune or your character becoming a god. While I appreciate recommendations like Stellaris and Crusader Kings, they don’t quite feel personal enough for me. I’m looking for games where you’re on a path to seize the throne or power, ideally with a narrative-driven focus. I want that immersive experience where I feel my character’s progression and growth personally.

If you’re open to crpgs, Owlcat’s games might be up your alley. In Rogue Trader, you take on the role of a powerful trader early on, while in Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, you start as a nobody but quickly rise to lead armies and face off against divine foes. You can even evolve into something powerful like a lich or dragon depending on your choices.

For something a bit different, Cult of the Lamb is a fun option. It’s quirky but allows you to build power through your cult and you’ll feel that shift in dynamic as you expand your influence. Bonus points for the unique style!

Final Fantasy XIV is another stellar pick. You start simply helping your city and then climb the ranks to become a huge celebrity and part of the realm’s politics. Plus, you get to face off against some epic beings, which is pretty fulfilling.

You should definitely check out any Elder Scrolls game. They focus heavily on personal journeys, and you start out feeling like just another character until you gradually become a hero. You get to feel that power surge and the story unfolds around you in a really engaging way.

You might really enjoy Baldur’s Gate 3 too. The progression from a lowly adventurer to potentially becoming a literal god is incredible. Plus, it’s got that strategic combat feel from games like CK3 and Stellaris without the map-staring, which is a nice change of pace!
