Hey everyone! I’ve had quite a journey with JRPGs, exploring many over the years, but I’ve found myself enjoying specific styles. My favorites mostly revolve around the Persona series for turn-based combat, but I really dig the gameplay in Shin Megami Tensei IV. Most of the time, I’m not into games that drag on with too much dialogue or slow pacing. I’m seeking suggestions for JRPGs that are gameplay-focused and can be either turn-based or action-based; just not those that mesh the two, like Xenoblade or any ATB systems. I own a PS4, Switch, and prefer PC gaming, so I’m open to emulations of classics if they fit the bill! What are some games that match this criteria?

You might want to check out the recent remaster of the Tales series, especially Tales of Graces F. It has some of the most enjoyable combat mechanics in the series. Plus, you can switch to the original Japanese dub, which many fans felt improved the storytelling experience!
What specifically held back the story in Tales, though?
You can’t go wrong with diving into more Shin Megami Tensei titles—there’s really a lot to explore! Nocturne is a solid start, and Strange Journey is on my list too, but I’d recommend alternating with other series to avoid burnout.
I’m currently starting on Nocturne! Just want to make sure I keep it fresh.
Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 are great for SMT spin-offs, especially since they use the press-turn system too! Just keep an open mind about some games; the pacing in FF7 and FF6 is brisk compared to the slower SMT style, which is why some might struggle with them.
Totally get that! SMT does demand more strategy in battles, which keeps me engaged. I think my issue with DQ8 was just impatience with bad encounters, but it might deserve a second chance.
You might also enjoy checking out the Etrian Odyssey series, Ys Origin, and even Monster Hunter for those gameplay mechanics!
Have you given Octopath Traveler a shot? It focuses heavily on gameplay mechanics, and while the first game’s story is decent, the second kicks it up a notch!
I’ve heard mixed reviews. I thought it was just story-heavy, but some say the combat shines too? How does it stack up against Bravely Default?
If you’re looking to try something different, the SaGa series has some quirky but engaging gameplay. I suggest looking into SaGa Scarlet Grace, even if it gets weird—it might surprise you!
The Romancing SaGa 2 remake was a blast for me! Gameplay is pretty excellent, very unique experience.
I’ve got Scarlet Saga on Steam but struggle to grasp what’s happening. It feels like it could be what I’m after if I just give it time.
I’ve had mixed feelings about the Tales series myself. I really enjoyed Berseria, but Vesperia didn’t hook me. It’s great to hear that Graces F is considered one of the best for combat!
