Hey everyone! I’m on the hunt for some RPGs that really capture the spirit of swashbuckling antics, pirates, and maybe some good old sword and flintlock action. I’m open to games that are mid-level in crunch, with cinematic or freeform combat, and I’d especially love to see some support for non-combat characters. I prefer low to mid-powered characters, and I think magic and undead could be interesting too! Just a heads up, I’m not a fan of Pbta systems, but I’ll consider any other recommendations. Thanks a lot!

“Pirate Borg” is always a blast! It ticks off most of your boxes, although the depth of crunch can vary with the naval combat. I’d certainly recommend it, it’s super fun!
I’d recommend “7th Sea” as it meets nearly all your criteria! Just be mindful that it leans towards higher-powered characters since they’re kind of heroes. But honestly, it’s the most fun I’ve had in a game!
7th Sea is awesome! However, I’d suggest looking into the 1st edition since it might match your dislike for Pbta much better. Honor + Intrigue’s swordplay is also worth trying out!
I absolutely love 7th Sea 2nd edition! It’s got a fantastic setting and a lot of creative freedom. But if you want something more structured, check out “Savage Worlds”—it’s great for all sorts of settings. Don’t forget about “Outgunned” too, as it has a mini setting just for pirates!
You should definitely check out “Honor+Intrigue”. Hands down, it’s the best swashbuckling game I’ve played so far!
Totally agree! It’s really well-designed for the swashbuckler vibe.
Just a note though: wanting cinematic combat while also wanting low-powered PCs is a bit tricky since cinematic often needs heroes doing extraordinary stuff. But 7th Sea’s 2nd edition is a nice upgrade if you’re into it!
