I’m on the hunt for a free tool to create my own detailed island maps. I’m not interested in city or dungeon maps, and I really dislike tools that create maps for you, like Azgaar. I’ve tried Inkarnate, but it doesn’t run well on my PC and most of its features are behind a paywall. Can anyone recommend software or a website where I can freely create my maps without costs?

If you want to keep it simple, some folks have used Excel or Google Sheets to make maps. It’s surprisingly effective if you don’t need anything too flashy. There’s a cool tumblr post that explains how someone did it; just import free textures and get creative!
Honestly, paper and pencil are underrated! I’ve made maps in Notepad, Paint, and even Excel. Sometimes the most basic tools can help you bring your ideas to life. Hexographer is good for structured maps, but don’t discount the classics!
Have you tried Hexographer? It’s free and has some great features for creating maps. I’ve been using it for years, and I honestly think it’s worth spending a little money on their upgraded version if you really get into it. Plus, it’s pretty easy to use!
Hexographer does sound good, but I also heard GIMP can be a solid option if you’re into a more artistic approach.
Yeah, I second Hexographer! It’s super handy for those hex tiles and really helps in organizing stuff like rivers and roads.
