Looking for Dark JRPG Recommendations After Final Fantasy X

-

Hey everyone! I’m currently playing Final Fantasy X and absolutely loving it. The characters, story, and combat have really captured my attention. Now, I’m on the hunt for my next game and would appreciate some recommendations in the JRPG genre. What I’m looking for is something with a really dark and depressing storyline; I’m not interested in anything that’s cartoonish or bright. I love boss fights with a grand feel, kind of like in Clair Obscur where the music hits just right during those epic moments. It’d be great if the game isn’t too long, and I’d really prefer a hack and slash style (except for Nier, I’m not looking for pixelated graphics). Thanks for any suggestions!

You could dive into FFX-2 next. It’s a direct sequel to FFX and has some cool gameplay changes. I understand the desire for recommendations, we all struggle sometimes in picking the next game to dive into!

It’s a bit surprising that you’ve loved FFX so much and then asked for something totally different. I get your desire for a darker tone but finding a JRPG that ticks all those boxes might be tough. There might not be a perfect match for such specific preferences.

You might want to check out The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. It has a vibe similar to FFX but set in the LOTR universe. Lost Odyssey and Resonance of Fate are also great dark JRPGs that might fit your taste. If you’re up for some action, Strangers of Paradise could be fun; it’s more hack and slash with a cool job system.

Definitely give Final Fantasy XII a shot! It’s got an engaging narrative and many consider it one of the best in the series. The main character does look a bit like Tidus, which could keep you in that FFX groove.

I was thinking about it too! Glad to hear it’s well-regarded!

If you’re looking to continue with something from the same creators, FFX-2 and FFXIII (along with its sequels) might resonate with you. They maintain a similar vibe, even if FFX-2 is a bit brighter.
