I recently got back into gaming after a 6-7 year break due to university and work commitments. I struggled to find games that let me relax and just enjoy the experience without stress. I tried some soulslike titles but didn’t like them much. Doom 2016 was fun but I felt pressured to rush through it instead of just chilling. RDR2 really clicked for me though—exploring, enjoying the story, and side quests without hardcore combat or grinding felt perfect. I also loved wandering Skyrim for hours and enjoyed parts of The Witcher 3 when I bought my gaming laptop.
Basically, I’m after games that are more about experiencing a memorable story and atmosphere rather than optimizing stats or completing challenging combat. Something chill to unwind with, where grinding is optional or not required, and that can run on my Steam Deck or be streamed from my laptop. Games like Firewatch or What Remains Of Edith Finch have really stuck with me for this reason. What other games would you recommend that fit this vibe?

For something with open world chill vibes, consider Kingdoms of Amalur ReReckoning if you liked Skyrim. Also Horizon Zero Dawn has great story and exploration without being too hardcore on combat. If you like narrative-driven emotional games, Night in the Woods and Goodbye Volcano High are wonderful (though they have a more cartoony style). Spiritfarer is another gem combining emotional storytelling with relaxing management gameplay and exploration.
You should definitely check out OneShot if you want something unique and memorable. It’s a game best experienced blind, so avoid any spoilers or guides. The story and emotional tone will stick with you for a long time. It has a version for the Deck too, though some say it plays better on PC.
Outer Wilds is a fantastic pick for that chill, exploratory vibe you described. It’s got a beautiful open world and a story that unfolds naturally as you explore, similar to how Firewatch works. Definitely one of those games you remember for its atmosphere and mystery.
Outer Wilds looks awesome from what I’ve seen, adding it to my list for sure. Appreciate the rec!
You might want to try Fallout 4 if you enjoy open world exploration mixed with story. It’s relaxed in that you can wander, do side quests or main story at your own pace without grinding. The whole Fallout series is great for looser gameplay styles like what you described.
Fallout 4 has been on my radar but never played it — good to know it fits this chill gaming vibe. Thanks!
Thanks, OneShot sounds intriguing! The clips and reviews make it seem like it’s exactly what I’m after.
