I’ve been diving into Harn and its expansive setting, Harnworld, and it seems perfect for my solo campaign of Mythras or Mythras Classic Fantasy set in a high medieval world filled with intrigue and brutal combat. The issue is, Harn has a ton of supplements, often with a pricey old-school model. From what I’ve read, starting with just one kingdom sourcebook isn’t enough; I’d likely need a few more for cities, castles, etc., which really adds up and is out of my budget right now. So, I’m on the lookout for other RPG campaign settings that capture a similar vibe to Harn but are simpler and cheaper. Any suggestions?

Honestly, you might get plenty of playtime just using HarnWorld. Pick a kingdom you like, grab its sourcebook, and just build from there. It’s a low fantasy setting, so you can borrow a lot from real history if you need more details.
You can find a lot of good info in European history. There are even free resources online that cover this extensively!
That’s a great thought! I’ve been thinking about running a campaign set in the Lake District, and this is exactly the inspiration I needed!
If you get the HarnWorld hardcover and one kingdom book, you should be set. Keep an eye out for sales and Kickstarter projects to expand your collection over time. Also, check out lythia.com for free fan-made downloads!
Yeah, I’ll look into the PDFs for sure. The shipping cost for the hardcovers was crazy high for me in the UK!
For sure! The Old World is rich with stories. If you explore the Song Dynasty in China, there’s a wealth of material you can turn into a fantasy setting by just swapping names around.
