Looking for an Exploration-Based Side Scroller with Casual Combat

-

I’m on the hunt for a side-scrolling game that emphasizes heavy exploration and has combat that’s engaging but not punishing. I want to avoid games where death means losing progress like corpse runs. I’ve already played titles like Rainworld and Animal Well, so I’m hoping for something a bit more informative and unique.

Have you checked out the Trine series? They’re great for co-op gameplay and involve a lot of puzzle-solving with beautiful environments.

I know it sounds unusual, but I genuinely recommend Flipwitch! It’s a fun side-scroller that’s all about puzzles and exploration. Plus, check out Isles of Sea and Sky—it’s like a top-down, Zelda-style game with a heavy focus on exploration and no combat. You might also enjoy revisiting the Castlevania GBA collection; Harmony of Dissonance is particularly good for exploration!

Here are some titles that might fit what you’re looking for:

– Axiom Verge
– Toki Tori 2
– Timespinner
– Psudoregalia (3D)
– Vomitorium (3D)
– Tomba! (PS1)

There’s a mix of styles here, but they all focus on exploration without being too punishing.

I haven’t heard of Tomba! in ages! Does it still hold up? I’m curious about revisiting those classic vibes.

You’ve definitely played Symphony of the Night, right? It’s a must for exploration fans!

Definitely try Shadow Complex! It has a nice blend of exploration and action without excessive punishment.
