Looking for a Story-Driven JRPG That’s Fun Without Being Frustrating or Grind-Heavy

-

I’m interested in playing an RPG or JRPG-style game that focuses more on an entertaining story than tough challenges or repetitive grinding. I dislike games where you have to manage tons of inventory items, craft endlessly, or struggle through brutal difficulty that stops progress. Ideally, I’d love a game with a system like the one I played years ago that had an “Equip Best” button, automatically choosing the best gear for your character so you don’t have to sift through hundreds of weapons and armor pieces. I also don’t have much free time, so the game should be easy to pick up and put down without overwhelming complexity or requiring me to memorize tons of quests or controls. Does a game like this even exist?

Definitely recommend Persona 5 Royal. The normal mode is pretty forgiving, and you can slide the difficulty way down if you want. Beyond that, it’s got a fantastic cast of characters and an awesome soundtrack that really pulls you into the story.

If you’re into JRPGs with easier difficulty and minimal fuss, Persona games could be right up your alley. On the easiest settings, it’s almost impossible to lose battles, so you won’t have to stress about gear or complex strategies. Another option is Dragon Quest XI, which offers an auto-equip feature that picks decent weapons and armor for your characters. It’s not perfect but good enough to keep things simple. You’ll still choose skills, but you can undo those choices if you want, so it’s pretty friendly for casual play.

About that underwater volleyball in Final Fantasy X—it’s actually not required to win the game at all. You can lose the match and still keep playing the story with no issues. So if it felt like you had to win to progress, something might have been glitchy or misunderstood. It’s more of an optional mini-game so you don’t have to sweat it if you’re not into that sort of challenge.

You could also try Chrono Cross. There are a ton of characters to pick from—44 in total—but you only need around 10 to 15 for your first playthrough. It’s story-driven and often praised for its engaging gameplay without too much tedious grinding. Gear management is straightforward too, so it might fit your criteria nicely.

You might want to check out the Final Fantasy series, especially titles like Final Fantasy VII or X. They usually have an option to auto-equip the best gear for your characters and are known for having strong storylines. Plus, they’re generally not too punishing if you’re looking for a more relaxed experience.
