Looking for a Niche Story-Driven Game That’s Not First-Person or Medieval

-

Hey everyone! I’m on the hunt for a new story-rich game to dive into. I have pretty specific tastes, so here’s what I’m looking for: no first-person perspective and definitely no medieval or mythological settings since I’m not into games like God of War or Horizon. I’ve already played a bunch of well-known titles like The Last of Us, all Telltale games, Quantic Dream’s lineup, Dontnod, Supermassive, L.A. Noire, Uncharted, GTA, RDR, Guardians of the Galaxy, Tomb Raider, Watch Dogs, and Arkham games. I’m open to something a bit niche or off the beaten path that scratches that story-driven itch. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Have you thought of trying Resident Evil 2 or 4? They have strong stories and aren’t medieval or first-person in the classic sense. Also, Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars: Survivor might hit the spot if you like story-driven games set in sci-fi worlds.

I just have to throw out a recommendation for Inscryption — it’s pretty unique and has a story that keeps unfolding in surprising ways. Definitely different from traditional story games but it made my top favorites list recently.

If story means a lot to you, you should definitely check out Stray — it’s a third-person adventure with a really cool setting and vibe. Since you mentioned you love Detroit: Become Human, it’s pretty different but still offers an immersive story experience.

I actually loved Detroit: Become Human, so I’ll give Stray a go for sure. Thanks!

You might really enjoy Control or Returnal. Both have strong narratives and unique settings that aren’t medieval or first-person. Control has a mysterious, supernatural vibe with great storytelling, while Returnal mixes sci-fi with rogue-like gameplay and a compelling story.

I know it’s tricky, but you might want to try King’s Quest (the 2015 reboot) or The Council. They’re both story-heavy and a bit different compared to what you’ve played. Also, Valiant Hearts is a really emotional story game that you might appreciate. If you’re open to something a bit artistic, the Team ICO games (Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian) are fantastic story experiences. Gravity Rush 1 & 2 and Ghost of a Tale are worth a shot too!
