Hey everyone! I’m primarily a DnD 5e player, but I’ve explored games like Shadowrun, Cyberpunk RED, and Delta Green. Recently, I’m on the hunt for new RPGs to try with my group, and I’m hoping to find something that fits certain criteria. Ideally, I’m looking for a game that leans toward medieval fantasy but I’m open to anything. Here’s what I’m after:
1. I want tactical combat that involves a grid or miniatures.
2. The game should be more narrative-friendly compared to 5e or Pathfinder, rewarding roleplay and exploration.
3. Combat should be less grindy than what I’ve experienced with 5e, aiming for faster, more dynamic encounters.
4. I prefer a game that maintains a clear GM-player divide. I appreciate narrative elements, but I don’t want the players to create scenes or characters on the fly, as we like the GM to guide the story.
I’ve looked into games like Dragonbane, Tales from the Loop, Draw Steel, Pendragon, and Daggerheart, but many aren’t fully released yet. Any recommendations for games that fit within these guidelines?

You might want to check out Savage Worlds! It’s really versatile and lends itself to tactical combat with a focus on narrative without losing the GM’s control. It doesn’t use a strict grid but is compatible with miniatures and terrain. It’s fun and allows for some explosive character moments even though I often skip the miniature rules for quicker combat.
That sounds promising! We’re pretty familiar with war games, so we could adapt to it nicely. I’ll definitely look into it.
