Hey folks! I’m thinking about diving into another playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas because I love the gameplay and post-apocalyptic vibe. However, the whole retro 1940s-50s era and themed setting just don’t really click for me. I’m wondering if there are any RPGs out there that have a similar feel but with a more modern or realistic post-apocalyptic setting? Something like the wasteland in The Book of Eli, where survival and fighting in a chaotic environment are key. I’m open to first-person, third-person, or even top-down RPGs, but definitely not text-based games. Would love any suggestions that capture that post-apoc atmosphere without the Fallout-style retro themes!

If you’re okay with something less RPG-heavy but still immersive, you might want to check out the Metro series or the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games. They both feature gritty, modern post-apocalyptic settings—Metro explores the Moscow underground after nuclear fallout, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is set in the eerie Chernobyl exclusion zone. They’re more survival-heavy and atmospheric, excellent for a darker, realistic vibe like you want.
Have you tried The Outer Worlds? It’s from the same creators as New Vegas but leans more into sci-fi and has a fresh vibe that isn’t stuck in the 50s aesthetic. It’s more modern feeling, with branching narratives and RPG mechanics you’ll probably like. Also, Wasteland 2 and 3 might fit the bill—they’re solid post-apocalyptic RPGs with a more contemporary tone, though a bit turn-based.
Totally agree, Outer Worlds is awesome and they even have a sequel coming out soon. Definitely worth checking out if you enjoyed New Vegas gameplay but want a different setting.
There’s also Colony Ship: A PostEarth Role Playing Game if you want something a bit different but still post-apocalyptic and focused on survival and exploration. It’s more top-down but has plenty of RPG elements and a unique story set in a harsher future environment.
Yeah, I’ve heard great things about both. Once I get my PC upgraded, I definitely plan to give S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 a try!
