My teenager wants to upgrade from a Ryzen 5 5600G at 1920×1080 to something that can handle 2560×1440 resolution. What kind of graphics card should I consider to match or improve on his current performance?

The RX 7600 is around $250 and might be the sweet spot for what you’re looking for. Also, don’t overlook the new AMD 9070 that just launched; it’s been getting some great reviews so far!
A lot of folks are saying you need to spend over $300 to beat the integrated GPU, but that’s not true. The B580 is a great choice. Cards like the RTX 4060, 4070, or even the 9070 are pretty much overkill for what you’re upgrading from. The RTX 3050 is decent, but not really suited for 1440p.
Lol, the 3050 isn’t going to cut it for 1440p gaming.
You might want to check out the RX 6700XT, 6750XT, or 7700XT. They should perform well at 1440p and give a nice upgrade from the integrated graphics.
For 1440p, you’re looking at needing about 1.75 to 1.78 times the performance of what he has now. Honestly, if you want to save some cash, sticking with 1080p could be wise unless you’re okay with investing in a more powerful 1440p card. Plus, if he enjoys shooters, consider prioritizing a 144Hz monitor rather than a 1440p one.
A solid budget option would be the B580 if you can find it at MSRP. It should give you good performance without breaking the bank.
Good suggestion, but it’s not even available for purchase yet! That’s a bit of a wild card.
