Hey everyone! I’m gearing up for some travel and I’ve downloaded a bunch of movies and TV shows legally. I’ve been using desktop mode to play them, but it’s not the best solution. I’m on the hunt for an app that manages my media library in a nice-looking way, similar to Plex. Tried Kodi, but dealing with add-ons and limited categories is frustrating. I really want to create custom categories like anime or stand-up. Plex HTPC doesn’t allow local media additions from what I’ve seen. Any recommendations? I appreciate your help!

You might want to explore Jellyfin if you’re aiming for something a bit different. It’s another media server option that could suit your needs, but be warned, it can be a bit of a brain teaser to set up, especially when it comes to locating your movies folder and customizing it the way you want.
If you’re looking to use Kodi, it’s possible to set it up by adding a launcher for Kodi in game mode. It might take a bit to get used to, but works well with the controller buttons and stick. I tend to ignore the add-ons and just organize my media by directories. Kodi does a solid job organizing my anime collection on my main media server.
Kodi is pretty popular for this kind of thing and while some people find it a bit tricky, once you get used to its quirks, it does sort files decently. That said, it can be annoying if the media can’t be scraped or recognized in its database. You might have to manually organize those files or use a similar naming structure to get them cataloged.
