Hey everyone, I’m trying to remember a game from about 20 years ago. It was a top-down 2D title where you controlled a vehicle that moved a bit like in Snake. The levels were pretty intricate with ramps, bridges, and multiple pathways. It might’ve had bonuses or even weapons, and the overall look had a cartoonish sci-fi vibe, possibly with a polished Japanese arcade feel. I played it on Linux, and I think it was open source. Any ideas on what game this could be?

I recall a game from my childhood called Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll, which was made by Rare. Even though it shares that snake-like movement, I don’t think it’s the one you’re talking about. Still, it’s worth cross-checking since they did a few top-down vehicular games back in the day.
Another title that popped into my head is Gomola Speed, which was on the PC Engine. It sports that old-school vibe with interesting level designs. Might not be an exact match, but it could be close enough to jog some memories.
Are you absolutely sure it was strictly a 2D game? When I think of snake-like mechanics in a vehicular setting, the first thing that crosses my mind is Armagetron, though that one tends to be more 3D-ish. Might need to double-check that detail.
Your description reminds me a bit of Jackal, the old arcade game that later made its way to NES and other home systems. It might be a long shot, but it fits some of the action vibe you’re describing.
One possibility could be the game available at https://ri-li.sourceforge.net/. It has that retro, top-down look and some of the mechanics you mentioned. Worth checking out to see if it matches what you remember.
