I’ve been diving into Final Fantasy XII recently, but it’s feeling a bit too easy for my taste, and I’m craving more character customization—both in terms of appearance and gameplay mechanics. Are there any JRPGs out there that can fulfill these desires while also providing a good challenge?

It’s tough finding JRPGs that blend customization and difficulty. If you’re after a hardcore challenge, you might want to explore SMT 3 or 5 on harder modes. Also, give ‘Metaphor’ a go on the highest difficulty. Just keep in mind, traditional JRPGs usually don’t offer much in terms of character creation—you might have better luck with action RPGs like Dark Souls or *Dragon’s Dogma* which offer character builds but fall outside the JRPG category. Still, they provide a solid challenge!
If you’re looking for a tough JRPG, give Shin Megami Tensei a shot! The series is known for its difficulty and tactical gameplay, especially in SMT V. Although you can’t change character appearances, the depth of combat and the importance of team builds and strategy are fantastic. There’s a free demo available on modern platforms, so you might want to try that out!
Metaphor is pretty challenging too, and while it doesn’t focus on looks, you have a lot of control over classes and builds.
I appreciate the suggestion! SMT sounds like it could be a good fit for me.
You’re likely asking for a lot with both deep customization and a solid challenge in a JRPG. Still, give *Tales of Arise* a shot and crank up the difficulty to maximum! It might just hit the mark!
Yeah, I might be aiming a bit high. Thanks for the heads up!
Check out Code Vein! It has fantastic character customization and also offers a good mix of fun gameplay with various builds to try out. It hits a nice balance between customization and gameplay depth!
Sounds interesting! I’ll definitely give Code Vein a look.
Totally get what you mean about the genre distinction; I’m really focused on JRPGs, though.
