I’ve been diving into the search for the perfect handheld gaming setup for Xbox Game Pass. I’m thinking about picking up a Series X to play games using Remote Play from my phone with a controller clip. However, I’ve had a challenging experience with Cloud Gaming; the visual compression in dark areas is pretty distracting, and I struggle with input latency as well.
I’m curious—does Remote Play offer better quality compared to Cloud Gaming? I understand both services involve offsite servers, but my understanding is that Remote Play doesn’t stream directly to my phone from the console. I’m looking for some clarity on how the two actually compare in terms of quality.

Cloud Gaming plays the Xbox Series S versions of games, which isn’t as powerful as the Series X. So, for visual quality, Remote Play on Series X should be superior. However, latency can sometimes favor Cloud Gaming if you’re far from your console. When I was traveling for work, Remote Play was almost flawless within a good connection, but if the signal wasn’t great and I was far from home, Xcloud held up better due to its closer servers.
So, Remote Play actually streams over your local network instead of depending on the Xbox servers, which should make it faster and clearer. You can check out this video for a good comparison. Just keep in mind that since Remote Play through the Xbox app has changed, you might want to use the new Xbox web portal for the best experience.
Try using alternatives like Better XCloud or XBPlay for a solid Remote Play experience!
Does this work just like it did on the Xbox One? I have an XBOne I could test it on, but I’ve heard that the performance may differ between the two consoles.
