I’ve been thinking about Vaan’s role in the story. I wonder if he’s just a secondary character or if he’s something else, maybe even a deuteragonist? What’s everyone’s take on this?

Honestly, Vaan feels like the audience’s stand-in in the story. He’s observing all these epic moments without being the center of attention. After Ashe joins, his plot impact drops, but his journey offers a contrast to her character arc.
I think of Vaan like Luke Skywalker without the connections—he’s around to grow and eventually become kind of a strong sidekick. The game really isn’t centered on him, even though he technically gets to level up a lot.
Exactly! Just because he narrates doesn’t make him the main dude. It’s like Vaan is just there to let us see the cool stuff happening around Ashe and the others. He’s kind of a window into their world, not the focus.
Vaan is definitely the perspective character since the story unfolds through his eyes. But to say he’s the main protagonist? Nah! The real stars are Ashe, Basch, and Balthier. They drive the narrative much more than he does.
Right! It’s a classic storytelling trick. Vaan’s more like our guide, while Ashe and Basch have the bigger stories. It’s good storytelling but he’s not the lead.
