Is using Heroic Game Launcher or Decky better than traditional Proton methods for installing game launchers?

-

I’m exploring different ways to install the Rockstar Launcher and Epic Games Launcher on my device. I’ve come across various YouTube tutorials discussing Heroic Game Launcher and Decky. I’m curious if there are any significant downsides to using these tools as opposed to doing it the traditional way, where you have to manually adjust paths and configurations with Proton. Any insights on the pros and cons?

Here’s a handy GitHub link with tools to install non-Steam launchers on your Steam Deck: https://github.com/moraroy/NonSteamLaunchers-On-Steam-Deck. It’s a good read if you want to understand the ins and outs. But there are some concerns; like, if the Steam OS updates, it might disrupt setups done through Heroic or Decky. Always good to stay informed before diving in!

The convenience of using something like Heroic is undeniable. It simplifies the process dramatically and provides a more streamlined way to get your launchers running. Though, beware that sometimes, post-update issues on Steam OS can affect launchers installed this way. Going the hard route gives you more control, but who doesn’t love a bit of convenience, right?

Honestly, if you know what you’re doing, setting up the Epic Launcher manually isn’t all that difficult. It usually takes around 10 minutes, but I understand that not everyone wants to mess around with detailed configurations. Heroic and Decky are definitely more user-friendly, especially if you don’t have a keyboard or mouse handy. However, some folks have mentioned that updates to Steam OS might occasionally break everything set up through these launchers, which can be a bit of a hassle.
