Hey everyone! I’m thinking about giving my aging PC a bit of a refresh by upgrading my GPU. I don’t game hardcore; I play occasionally and usually at 1080p. I’m just looking for a few extra FPS and a chance to bump up some graphics settings. Here’s my current setup:
– **CPU**: Intel i7 4790
– **GPU**: Radeon RX 6650 XT GAMING 8G
– **RAM**: 32GB DDR4
– **Motherboard**: MSI Z270I Gaming Pro Carbon AC
I’m considering switching to an Nvidia card out of curiosity and better compatibility with some software I use. The GPUs I’m looking at are the RTX 4060, RTX 4060 Ti, RTX 5060, and RTX 5060 Ti. Do you think upgrading is a good idea given my current system? Would my i7 4790 bottleneck these GPUs too much, or can I expect a decent improvement without having to overhaul my whole setup? Thanks for any advice!

Honestly, the i7 4790 is likely going to bottleneck those new GPUs a lot. It really depends on what software you’re using, as many programs are more CPU-bound than GPU-bound. Your issues might actually stem from the CPU rather than the GPU. Just curious, what games are you playing?
Upgrading your GPU sounds like a solid plan! Even if there is some bottleneck with the i7 4790, it probably won’t be a huge deal for casual gaming. Just make sure to check your power supply to ensure it can handle the new GPU. But honestly, given that you’re using a 4th gen Intel chip, saving up for a complete system upgrade might make more sense in the long run.
My PSU should be alright for the new card.
Don’t laugh, but I’ve been really into F1 lately—it’s super relaxing! I’ve also been able to play Cyberpunk and God of War without major issues. I’m just shooting for stable 60 FPS at 1080p without too many compromises.
