I’m planning to upgrade my GPU for the upcoming release of GTA 6, since my current 2080 with only 8GB isn’t cutting it anymore at 1440p. I just found out that my motherboard only supports PCIe 3.0. How much of a performance boost can I expect with PCIe 4.0, and is it worth it to switch from AM4 to AM5 just for that upgrade?

If you’re looking at midrange GPUs like the 4070 or 5070, the difference in performance between PCIe 3.0 and 4.0 is really minimal—only about 1-3% at most. If you’re planning to buy something like a 9070xt or 5070 ti, I’d say it’s worth considering a move to AM5 for a new platform. If you’re ready to spend over $600 on a GPU, upgrading your motherboard would likely be a smart choice unless you’re rocking a 5700X3D or 5800X3D—which could still hang on with PCIe 3.0.
I currently have an x270 with a Ryzen 9 5900X and a 2080. Just checking because I want to make the best choice for the upgrade.
