Hey everyone! I’m wrapping up my PC build that I’ve been working on for a couple of months and I’m about to buy my last component. I was planning on getting the Samsung 990 Pro 4TB NVMe drive, but I’ve heard some people mention potential issues with it and I’m feeling a bit hesitant. Are there any solid alternatives I should consider? I’ll be using this drive mainly for gaming and some VR. I’m thinking of snagging it off Ebay for around $250. Appreciate any insights!

Definitely check out the NM790 4TB too. It’s a good option!
Honestly, the issues with the 990 Pro were mostly fixed a while back. Just make sure to update the firmware if you’re getting older stock. That said, it’s a bit overkill for gaming — you might save 1-2 seconds in loading time over slower drives, so if you want to save some bucks, a cheaper one would do fine.
If you’re looking for a cheaper option, consider the EVO Plus. There’s basically no difference in gaming performance between them, and it runs cooler too. Technically, the 990 Pro is just a tiny bit faster, but it’s not noticeable in games. Plus, the EVO Plus has more versatility with lane support on motherboards. So for gaming, I’d recommend the EVO Plus since it’s cheaper and more efficient!
Thanks for the advice! I already bought the PRO with the heatsink since I wanted to go all out, especially after waiting for VR games to load forever. But I appreciate the heads-up!
The SN850X is a solid alternative if you’re looking for something else. Just make sure to check the price difference, though. It’s only about $12 more on Ebay; is that worth it to you?
Yeah, but that $12 is like a whole meal for me. What do you think? Is it really better?
That one’s like $285 on Ebay, compared to the $250 for the Samsung. Do you think it’s worth that extra cash?
