I recently played and really enjoyed the Final Fantasy IV Pixel Remaster, which is one of my favorite games in the series. I’m curious if the DS version offers enough differences or extra content to make it worth a playthrough as well. Has anyone experienced both versions? I’d appreciate thoughts on how the DS version compares, including gameplay, story, difficulty, and features.

Honestly, many fans suggest the PSP version over the DS and Pixel Remaster because it’s considered the most feature-complete 2D release with a great balance of content and polish. But if you want to stick to the DS version, just be ready for a tougher difficulty spike and to plan your Augments carefully, especially if you want to tackle superbosses later on.
If you really liked IV, I recommend also checking out Final Fantasy IV: The After Years, which continues the story. But focusing on the DS version, it’s got a lot of fresh voice acting and storyboard-style cutscenes that reimagine the 2D animation, adding a new flair compared to the Pixel Remaster. Also, it’s easier to find on modern platforms like Steam or iOS than hunting for the old cartridge or dealing with emulation.
In short, yes, the DS version feels like a different experience rather than just a simple remake. Maps and basic story points are the same, but gameplay changes and story expansions make it stand out. The Pixel Remaster is great, but the DS version’s difficulty and content justify a separate playthrough if you’re a big fan.
The DS version is quite different from the Pixel Remaster, with significantly expanded story elements and a unique Augment system that lets you customize characters by borrowing abilities from others. It’s also known to be harder, so if you’re up for a challenge, it’s definitely worth trying. Plus, the DS version includes New Game+ allowing up to three playthroughs with carryover, which adds replay value.
Thanks! The Augment system sounds interesting. I’ll be sure to check out some guides to make the most of it.
