I’ve been thinking a lot about subclassing and how it’s often seen in a negative light. While some people are against it, I honestly believe it’s not a bad idea—it’s just not being utilized to its full potential. Subclassing gets a bad rep because it’s often viewed through the lens of a traditional class system. This slower method of introduction is to avoid making the game feel drastically different all at once. However, what if we flipped that idea on its head?
Imagine if we completely ditched the class system altogether and instead based character development on skills connected to actions, weapons, and combat styles. We’d have evolving skill trees that focus on specialization and offer the flexibility to mix and match skills based on what we actually want to play with, rather than being restricted by class lines.
If there were no traditional classes to worry about, we’d have the freedom to create truly unique characters. Skills could be learned from different ‘guilds’ or groups, kind of like how real life works—acquiring new skills through experiences rather than being tied to a rigid class identity. I think this could lead to a much richer gaming experience. What do you all think? Is this a good idea, or am I off my rocker? And sorry for any spelling mistakes; English isn’t my first language!

You know, I think it would’ve gone over really well if they had marketed subclassing as a total class overhaul instead of what it is now. It feels like they’re easing us into it.
Honestly, even with the changes they’ve made thus far, it feels like they might as well be creating a whole new game with how different it is now compared to launch.
Absolutely! And when I think about it, the game has evolved so much since the early days. I just hope the changes they’ve hinted at in podcasts actually come to fruition.
Some folks might argue that it’s too drastic, but a total revamp could be just what this game needs. What if they pulled the plug on the whole class system—wouldn’t that shake things up?
I get where you’re coming from, but one downside of cherry-picking skills is that it could lead to everyone becoming too similar—imagine if the meta becomes even more uniform because everyone picks the same few powerful skills! Rather than making subclassing a mix-and-match game, I think it would be cooler to expand the current classes by adding branching skill trees for more depth. Like, what if a Necromancer could unlock a unique ‘Zombie Bear’ ultimate? That would make class differentiation much more interesting!
True, but that’s how things are right now too! Most PvE builds just recycle the same setups and rotations, no? It’s a bit repetitive.
Haha, okay, I kinda agree with you! If they kept adding layers to each class instead of forcing us to pick from other skill lines, it could totally revitalize gameplay.
For sure! But let’s be real, if they made this giant leap, it would mean a lot of work on their end. Subclassing is locked until after level 50 for a reason.
