I just fought Ozma and it seems like pure RNG to me! The first time around, he countered everything I did with Curaga and used spells like Curse, Meteor, and Flare Star, completely wiping me out. But the next time, he didn’t use Curaga at all and instead tossed out spells like Holy and Doomsday, which I was able to reflect back at him and take him down easily. I didn’t change my strategy at all, and yet I had completely different experiences both times. Is there really a strategy to take him down, or is it just luck?

Honestly, I think Ozma is a weak way to finish such a great game. There should’ve been a stronger optional boss. Hades is cool but he doesn’t compare to what a final optional boss should be.
Ozma’s speed is tricky. He fills up his ATB bar if you queue actions while he’s idle, which makes it seem like he’s super fast. Instead, try selecting your actions during his animations to stay ahead of him. Also, he adapts his moves based on your levels and what abilities you can absorb, so there’s actually a bit of strategy to him. Check out the detailed battle scripts online, they can be really eye-opening!
Honestly, I’d take Ozma over some other bosses. At least he’s not like Orphan from XIII, who can wipe your team out randomly after hours of grinding. That fight just feels like a roll of the dice, unlike Ozma where there’s a bit of strategy involved.
If you can get those guaranteed 9999 skills to hit—like Thievery, Frog Drop, and Dragon Crest—combined with Steiner’s Charge, he becomes much easier to tackle! It’s all about maximizing your damage output effectively.
Ozma has no ATB mechanics which allows him to attack consecutively. Watch out for Meteor and Curse—they’re the real threats. If you have a character whose level is a multiple of 4, you can protect against Level 4 Holy. Items like Ninja Gear and Pumice Pieces can nullify Doomsday. It’s all about prepping your team right!
