I’m thinking of diving back into Helldivers with all the new content that’s been buzzing around. But I remember that with previous updates, there were these ‘battle pass’ systems that required paid currency to access. Is that still the case? I really want to enjoy the new features, but I don’t want to shell out for multiple passes if they’re $10 each. I know the currency could be earned in-game, but it was pretty sparse. By the way, I hope the ‘Right for Democracy’ event has been good!

The big new addition is the Illuminate, which you can play for free—great fun! You should find cars in their biomes which adds a fun twist to gameplay. As for any new weapons, you do need to buy warbonds, which has always been part of the game’s mechanics, so it’s not exactly a new thing. Even though some say it’s a paywall, I’d argue it’s just how the game was designed to be played.
You can actually grind a battle pass in about 3 hours if you’re queuing with random players. I did it right before the latest patch and got around 900 credits in a few hours by completing missions. Just play it at a lower difficulty, and it’s pretty straightforward. That said, if you don’t want to grind for it, then yeah, a lot of the new stuff is behind a paywall. Seems like the free battle pass earlier was just a teaser.
Not everything is behind a paywall. Sure, most of the new weapons and armor require premium currency, but there’s a new enemy faction called the Illuminate that you can fight without paying extra. Out of all the weapons currently in the game, 32 out of 46 are premium, but a good number of stratagems—58 out of 64—are free to acquire. Since you already have the game, I’d recommend jumping back in to check out the new enemy types and mission setups. Just be prepared that you might need to spend a bit on warbonds if you want the new premium gear.
