My Xbox One S is about to turn 5 years old this July, and lately, it’s been running pretty slow. It takes around 8 seconds for the Xbox logo to show on my TV and about 50 seconds to boot up to the main menu. Sometimes, the game icons take a few extra seconds to load too. I’ve been careful with it — keeping it dust-free, well ventilated, and in energy saver mode. I usually play around 8 hours a week when I get free time. Do you have any tips to help me keep it running smoothly for a bit longer, especially since newer consoles might get a lot more expensive? Or should I just not worry too much about it? I’m a bit unsure how many more years I can expect from my Xbox One S baby.

If you’re really concerned about performance, swapping out the hard drive for an SSD could help speed things up quite a bit. It usually costs less than $100 and isn’t too complicated if you’re comfortable following some YouTube tutorials. The SSD makes game loading times much quicker and might help with the lag you’re experiencing during boot up and menu navigation. Just keep in mind you’ll need somebody’s help or a PC for some of the setup steps if you can’t do it yourself, but it’s a solid way to breathe new life into your One S.
If you’re noticing slow boot times and lag with game icons loading, a factory reset could actually help. I’ve had my original Xbox One slow down and even get a black screen of death once, but doing a factory reset fixed most issues for me. It’s a bit of a hassle since you’ll need to back up data (or have it saved in the cloud), but it can give your console a nice speed boost and fresh start. Worth a try before thinking about upgrading.
Yeah, I’ve thought about trying a factory reset if things keep getting slower or worse. I already tried a hard reset once and it only made icons load a little faster, but everything else stayed slow. Might wait a bit longer and reset if it gets bad.
Honestly, since your One S is almost 5 years old and getting slow, it might be worth considering trading it in now while it still has some value. You could probably get a decent credit towards an Xbox Series S, which would be a huge upgrade. If you’re worried about prices going up on new consoles, trading in now might save some money in the long run rather than waiting to see if your current Xbox dies completely. Just something to think about if you want to upgrade without breaking the bank.

I was wondering about that, but I don’t have a laptop or computer to prep the SSD or do any transfers. Not super tech-savvy either. Sounds like it might be a bit tricky for me without extra gear.
