I recently experienced a frustrating issue where my save files on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) disappeared. This happened first with my game ‘Secret of Mana’—after playing from a fresh save, I turned it on and it only gave me the option to start anew. Then, just today, I noticed the same thing with ‘Super Mario World,’ which I had also saved on a fresh file last week. Could it be that the batteries in the cartridges are dying, or is there something else going on with my SNES?

It sounds like it’s definitely the batteries! I had a similar thing happen with my ‘Chrono Trigger’ cartridge, and I found out the battery was the culprit. Just swapping them out fixed the problem for me. Maybe it’s the same for you!

Totally agree! It’s probably just a coincidence about the timing. Check out some tutorials on how to replace those batteries. You might need a little practice with soldering, but I managed to do it in about 30 minutes, and it wasn’t as tough as I thought!
