Hey everyone! I’m thinking about making the switch to Linux for gaming, but I have some concerns about performance. My current setup is a Radeon RX 5600 XT and an R5 3600, which is a bit underpowered. Do you think I’ll see a performance difference when playing indie games like Hades 2 and also some AAA titles like Elden Ring? I’ve heard that desktop environments and widgets can slow things down, and as a fan of desktop clock widgets and transparent taskbars, I’m wondering if they’ll affect performance too.

Check out ProtonDB to see how well games like Hades and Elden Ring perform on Linux. It can show you if a game runs smoothly or needs tweaking. As for your desktop widgets, it really depends on the Linux distribution. Many are actually more efficient than Windows, which can be quite a resource hog. Personally, I switched because Windows 11 was slowing me down and gaming on distros like Nobara or Pop!_OS is a breeze. They work well right out of the box!
I’m a bit concerned if Valve will support me in terms of ProtonDB since I dabble in piracy. Any insight?
Generally, games like Elden Ring can perform better on Linux than on Windows because Valve has optimized the game for the translation layer. You might want to search for specific performance reports of the games you’re interested in using your current setup on Linux.
I’m not convinced that holds true anymore. Valve did some great work with Proton and recompiled shaders, but with modern graphics pipelines, many games run just as well on both platforms now. Besides, the Steam Deck runs better than it used to!
Linux offers so much customization but yeah, it requires a bit of tech-savvy to get everything working perfectly. I love tinkering too, but I also want things like Moonlight to run smoothly without hassle.
Hades will run great on your hardware! As for Elden Ring, just don’t expect to max it out at 4K! A solid 1080p should work fine, though.
I can’t even maintain 60 fps at 1080p with my setup, so I get it!
Your AMD setup should work fine. It should perform as expected without any major issues, so don’t stress too much about it!
What about Moonlight? I rely on it for gaming and heard it can have network issues. Do you have any experience with that?
