I’m curious if Kid Icarus: Uprising is the only first party exclusive title for the 3DS that’s completely original and not simply a downgrade or port of previous games. For example, Mario 3D Land is like a stripped-down version of 3D World, Donkey Kong Country Returns is just a Wii port, Smash Bros. 4 is similar to the Wii U version with different levels, and A Link Between Worlds is basically A Link to the Past with some new dungeons and mechanics. Is Kid Icarus really the only unique entry in that regard?

It’s interesting how you define ‘not a worse version’. I think New Super Mario Bros 2 has its fans, but it doesn’t hold up against the Wii U version. About your question, we might consider Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword as a completely new experience. Also, Triforce Heroes delivers a different spin on the Zelda universe, but still falls under that multiplayer co-op vibe.
It’s worth noting that there’s a pretty solid case for Kid Icarus being a reboot rather than a totally new game, especially given the long gap since the previous installments. So it’s still quite unique, but maybe not as original as it seems.
Codename S.T.E.A.M. is worth mentioning. It’s definitely a different take on strategy gameplay and feels pretty fresh for a Nintendo title.
You could consider Tomodachi Life and Steel Diver as original takes. Although their reception varied, they brought something new to the table. Also, you mentioned Sin & Punishment Star Successor, which, while not first party, is in the same gameplay vein as Kid Icarus.
Happy Home Designer and Paper Mario: Sticker Star are pretty original for their brands, although they didn’t receive much love. Also, don’t forget about Ever Oasis—it’s a unique IP for the 3DS with a charming vibe.
Yeah, Triforce Heroes feels different with its focus on teamwork! Totally agree there.
