I’m currently rocking an RTX 4090 paired with a Ryzen 7800X3D mainly for playing VALORANT. I recently picked up a PG27AQDP monitor, which supports 1440p at 480Hz, but I’m stuck using DSC because it only supports DisplayPort 1.4a. I’ve done some research and I don’t think upgrading to a 5090 is worthwhile, considering the game I play doesn’t really need that extra power. However, I’m curious about switching to a 5080, mainly due to its support for DP 2.1, which would let me ditch DSC. I doubt I’ll notice any clarity difference, but are there any other benefits to DP 2.1? I’m contemplating selling my 4090 for a 5080, even though I may lose some performance, but I’m not really tapping into that power for my main game. Am I crazy for considering this?

Honestly, I think you should stick with your 4090. It’s still an absolute powerhouse and handles most games like a champ. Plus, there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the 5000 series, so it might be worth waiting it out a bit longer before making any moves.
If you’re really questioning whether you’re crazy for wanting to downgrade, it’s probably a sign that you shouldn’t. The performance trade-off isn’t worth it, especially since you might not even notice the difference in your usual gameplay. Just hold onto the 4090 for now!
There really isn’t a noticeable “clarity gain” from switching to DP 2.1. DSC is visually lossless, and in a double-blind test, most people wouldn’t even be able to tell the difference between compressed and uncompressed signals. So, you might be overthinking this!
Upgrading now might not be necessary; you could easily wait a couple of generations before needing to switch things up. Plus, the 4090 has more VRAM, which is going to help with future-proofing your setup!
