With the announcement of Pokémon Legends: ZA, I’ve been wondering if I should play its predecessors first. From the trailer, the gameplay looks quite similar to Legends: Arceus, and also, Pokémon ZA is set in a city that appeared in Pokémon XY. I never played Arceus originally because I wasn’t a fan of its historical setting and the graphics, plus I saw mixed opinions after it launched. As for Pokémon XY, I skipped it during the 3DS era since I wasn’t really into Pokémon back then. So, do you think playing XY or Arceus is worth it before diving into Legends: ZA? Or should I just save up for the new game? Thanks!

If you have the chance, playing Pokémon XY is definitely worth it. It might not be the absolute best Pokémon game out there, but it will help you get more out of Legends: ZA since the new game takes place in a city from XY. As for Legends: Arceus, if you didn’t like the past-era setting or the visual style, you don’t need to play it because its story and characters probably won’t be connected to ZA.
Mechanically, ZA might play a lot like Arceus, so if you want to get used to that style, Arceus could help. But story-wise, it’s pretty separate.
I’d say playing XY first gives you more context for Legends: ZA. While Arceus has gameplay closer to ZA, it doesn’t share story or characters. Playing XY will help you get familiar with the Kalos region and its vibe, making ZA feel like a nice follow-up. So if you’re curious about the world and story, start with XY.
Thanks! Between X and Y, do you recommend one over the other? Are there big differences?
