Is it tough to replace broken shoulder buttons on a used Steam Deck?

-

I found a used Steam Deck at a fantastic price—40% off the 64GB base model, plus it comes with a 512GB SD card! However, there’s a catch: the shoulder bumpers (L1/R1) aren’t working and will need replacement. I’m not super tech-savvy; I’ve only opened and cleaned some PS4 and PS5 controllers. I know I could remap the buttons to the back paddles for now, but I’d really like to get it working perfectly in the long run. How difficult is it to replace those buttons for someone with minimal experience?

Honestly, I don’t even use the bumpers on the Steam Deck. They’re kind of flimsy and not placed well anyway. I’d suggest remapping them to the back paddles; those feel great and are quicker when you get the hang of it! Just be cautious—if both bumpers are broken, it might suggest some internal damage due to a hard drop or something.

Yeah, that’s what I worry about too. I’ve heard impact is usually what causes them to fail. Selling something like that, especially if the previous owner didn’t mention any falls, is a red flag.

Replacing those buttons might involve some soldering, which could be tricky if you’re not sure what you’re doing. Just so you know, they often break from drops. It might be better to assess the overall condition first before diving into repairs.

Also, what’s the asking price? I snagged my 512GB Steam Deck for $200, and it was in mint condition with a skin and original case. You might find a better deal if you don’t rush it!

You can totally fix it if you’re patient! It’s not as tough as it seems. Check out this guide: [YouTube link](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqGWo01dT6g). It’ll show you the steps and you can decide if you’re up for it!

If the guy is asking for more than $150, I’d say skip it. If both shoulder buttons are broken, that usually means it took a nasty fall and could have hidden damage inside. Better to keep looking!
