Is it okay to jump straight into X-2 after finishing X?

-

After finally completing FF10, which took me three tries over the years with some help from this community, I’m considering diving into X-2. I’ve heard a lot of mixed opinions about it, and I worry that playing them back-to-back might feel too grindy. Is X-2 really different enough from X to make it a fresh experience, or should I take a break before starting it? And please, no spoilers!

FFX-2 changes things up a lot with its mission-based structure and faster-paced combat style. It’s definitely a different experience, and while the game tracks lots of progression, you can have fun without a guide. Just be ready for some j-pop vibes since Yuna becomes a pop star! If repeat locations get to you, that might be a point to consider, but overall, there’s plenty of fun to be had.

It’s totally different enough that you shouldn’t worry about burnout. The vibe is much more silly and upbeat compared to the heavier themes in FF10. It builds on the world you just explored, and even though you’ll see familiar places and characters, the gameplay refreshes the experience. If you’re open to a lighthearted journey with fun combat, it can complement your time in Spira nicely!

I’d say it really depends on your perspective. I tried playing X-2 right after X twice and couldn’t get into it, but on my third attempt, after a bit of a break, I found it way more enjoyable because of the nostalgia. You might want to step away for a bit if you’re unsure, but if you’re willing to dive in, just know it’s got a completely new feel and approach that might surprise you!

Honestly, I don’t see any reason why you can’t go straight into X-2 after finishing X. I just played both games back-to-back for the first time, and I found X-2 to be shorter and easier than X. The combat is really fun, and the tone is a lot lighter and more upbeat, so it won’t feel like a grind at all if you enjoyed the gameplay. You’ll be surprised by how different and engaging it can be right after X!
