I’ve been playing Minecraft for about 250 in-game days and haven’t yet defeated the Ender Dragon. I know that choosing a slower approach can make the game more enjoyable, but am I reaching a point where it feels necessary to complete the game?

Meh, it’s not going anywhere. Just beat it whenever you feel like it. Enjoy the journey, no need to rush to the end!
Honestly, you could take a thousand days without battling the Ender Dragon, and that’s totally fine! The dragon is optional, and if you prefer building a massive base or exploring, go for it! It’s all about how you want to play the game.
Yes, it’s your game, so you set the rules! If you feel you want to take your time, do it! Just be aware you’re missing out on shulker boxes, but you can always obtain those without defeating the dragon.
There’s no rush to fight the Ender Dragon! You can play at your own pace, and if you’re enjoying the mid-game, stick with it. You can always gather resources and build your way to the end islands when you’re ready. Remember, Minecraft is a sandbox game — progress when it feels right for you.
