I currently have a PC with 16GB of RAM and an MSI 8650 Gaming Plus WiFi motherboard. I’m planning to upgrade my RAM because I do editing work in Premiere Pro and After Effects, and I also game sometimes. Should I add another 16GB stick to get 32GB total, or should I go for a full 32GB kit (or more) to achieve 48GB? Also, I’m unsure if mixing RAM kits is a good idea for performance and stability.

I’d recommend buying a 32GB kit and selling your current 16GB to recoup some money. That way you have a matched pair, which boosts stability and performance. A full kit with higher speeds and lower latency will really help with editing and gaming.
It’s generally best to get a new matching RAM kit instead of mixing your current stick with another one. Mixing kits with different speeds or latencies can cause instability or worse performance. Getting a single 32GB kit will give you more reliable performance, especially for demanding tasks like video editing and gaming.
Totally agree with the other replies. Mixing different RAM modules can cause crashes and reduce performance because the system tries to sync timings and speeds. Your safest bet is getting a new kit that’s designed to work well together. For your MSI motherboard, looking for kits around 6000MHz with good timings like 6000C30 would be ideal, especially if you’re using an AMD platform. That’ll give you both speed and stability for editing software and gaming.

Thanks for the tip! Also, should I go for DDR4 or DDR5 if I pick a new 32GB kit?
