I’ve been holding off upgrading my GTX 970 for years because I kept hearing that it’s not the best time to buy a new graphics card. Now I’m finally thinking about getting either the RX 7600 XT or the RX 7800. My current setup is an ASUS PRIME Z490-A motherboard, an Intel i5 10400 10th gen CPU, a 630W power supply, and 16GB Ballistix DDR4-3200 RAM. Would you guys recommend grabbing one of those cards now, or should I consider other options? Any advice or suggestions would be super helpful!

Honestly, April and May might be one of the better windows to buy a GPU for a while. If tariffs do kick in, prices could jump higher, but right now you can find some decent deals if you keep an eye out. For example, recently 7900 XT models were going for around $650 and some 5070 Ti cards near $800. Also, the new 9070 XT cards are starting to appear, and if you can find one under $700, that’s a pretty fair price for the performance.
Prices just keep going up. I went for a 6750 XT earlier this year instead of waiting on the 9070 series because of tariffs and all the uncertainty. I’m happy I pulled the trigger because the price jumped about 20% since February! So it might not get cheaper anytime soon.
I’d say it’s not the best time right now. If you want something budget-friendly and compatible with your setup, look into the RX 6600 — it’s got a solid price whether new or used. If you’re more into Nvidia, a used RTX 3060 12GB can be found for around $200 or less, which pairs nicely with your build too.
Thanks for the tip! I’ve heard newer games rely more on memory, so I thought a card with 16GB VRAM would last longer before needing another upgrade. Still getting the hang of PC building, so all the advice helps a lot! I’ll definitely check out the 6600.
Ugh, I feel that. I just want my poor GTX 970 to handle 30fps again without struggling. Feels frustrating watching the prices climb!
