Hey everyone! I’m curious about the current state of HDR support on Linux Mint, especially when using an Nvidia GPU. I’ve heard that using Wayland is a requirement for HDR functionality, so I tried logging in with the ‘Cinnamon (Wayland)’ option, but all I got was a black screen and had to force restart my machine. I’d rather not switch to Gnome since I really dislike its interface. Any thoughts or insights?

Cinnamon is designed to be lightweight and compatible, but if you’ve got a high-end PC, I suggest you try out KDE or Gnome. Gnome has a big update rolling out soon that’s expected to include full HDR support, and it’s had VRR support for quite some time. Fedora is often recommended for getting the best high-end Linux experience!
Unfortunately, HDR support on the Cinnamon Desktop is still pretty limited since it doesn’t fully support Wayland yet—it’s kind of in the experimental phase. So, you might have to wait a while longer for HDR and similar modern features to be available with Mint and Cinnamon. They’re probably still a year away from getting decent Wayland support.
Gotcha! So, does this mean switching to a different desktop environment in Mint wouldn’t help either? Is it mainly a Mint issue?
Nope, not at the moment! If you’re looking for good HDR support, you might want to try a Fedora KDE spin instead.
Is KDE something I can add to my Mint setup?
I checked it out—KDE isn’t available to install on Mint, lol. Guess I’m stuck!
I had to restore my system using TimeShift after my Wayland login attempt. Just a heads up!
