I came across a YouTube video that really advocates for unlocking the Gunsmith skill, but I’m a bit torn. I’ve got 11 skill points right now and I’m about to score the last training Stim in Slatten Dale as mentioned by another YouTuber. With 12 points, I could choose between Gunsmith and Deep Pockets. Deep Pockets sounds tempting since I’m struggling with my inventory. I’ve just been exploring Slatten Dale and haven’t dived deep into the main quest yet. I’m playing on the easiest mode, so I’m wondering if unlocking Gunsmith and crafting guns will significantly improve my gameplay, or if I should put my points towards something else. Long story short, is Gunsmith really that useful in the early game?

Honestly, I completed the game without ever finding the Gunsmith, and I didn’t upgrade my guns at all. So it’s doable without it!
Just a heads up—Deep Pockets won’t increase your item slots; it merely boosts the materials you gather. If you’re good at sniping enemies with headshots, you might not need Gunsmith right away. However, when you face tougher foes like robots or turrets, upgrading does become important. Personally, I started sprucing up my guns after tackling a big portion of Wyndham Village.
I’d recommend getting both skills! Gunsmith is really valuable early on, especially since you tend to find a lot of weapons. Don’t forget to grab gun oil when you see it. If you’re worrying about skill points, check out the church basement in the village for some goodies!
I’d argue that even robots aren’t too hard if you strategize. Keep your materials handy for sticky bombs and shotgun rounds; they work wonders on hard mode!
