Hey everyone! I’ve just reached the Nalbina Dungeon in Final Fantasy XII, and aside from some mixed feelings on the voice acting (Vaan and Fran don’t do it for me; Balthier and Vayne are awesome), I’m really loving the game’s immersive world. The graphics are stunning, and the Gambit system, while it may have been complex back in the day, feels pretty straightforward and even charming to me now, especially with all the new RPGs I’ve played. I can’t help but wonder how light elements of Gambits could enhance the battle system in future titles like FF17. I’m curious if the game continues to improve in terms of story, battle mechanics, and overall adventure. I’m seeing Vaan more as a conduit to interact with other, more compelling characters rather than as a main protagonist. How’s the game going to be from here on out?

Poor Vaan, right? I get what you’re saying; a lot of folks see him as just that vessel for us to explore the world. But honestly, the game does get better! As you dive deeper, the story gets richer, especially Larsa’s arc and all the politics at play. The battles become more engaging too, particularly with the various optional bosses that really showcase the Gambit system.
Bad voice acting? I think that’s a bit harsh! While I get the sound quality might not be stellar, the voice actors really do bring a lot to the characters. Vaan’s role might seem small, but he connects some cool dynamics between the main cast. Plus, if you pay attention, he reflects how ordinary folks are affected by the wars of the powerful, which adds depth to the story.
Thanks for that perspective! I’ll try to engage more with Vaan’s role going forward.
I love the game too, but can we talk about how it’s kinda a Star Wars homage? I mean, Vaan is like Luke Skywalker, and Balthier totally channels Han Solo vibes. It’s hard not to see those connections! Still makes me want to replay it all over again after realizing that.
Haha, I see it! Just remember, it’s pretty surface-level, but it’s a fun comparison.
Totally. I think the optional bosses are where the combat shines best.
