I’m considering diving into Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age for my first playthrough. I’ve really enjoyed other Final Fantasy games, especially the classic ones with turn-based battles and also liked the combat system in FF15, but I want to know if FF12 is as good as people say. What’s the gameplay like? How’s the story? Would it be a good fit for someone who loves exploring RPGs?

FF12: The Zodiac Age is definitely the best version of the game! The Gambit system might take some getting used to, but it adds a ton of strategy. Once you learn it, you’ll find it super intuitive and rewarding to watch your AI team crush tough enemies! Plus, the exploration is fantastic; there are so many beautiful areas to discover.
Totally! The new version has a ton of quality-of-life improvements and added content that really elevates the experience.
It’s solid! The battle mechanics and grand scale world make for a deep experience. Though the story does have its dry moments, it’s very much worth playing for the exploration and gameplay alone. The job system is interesting, but the characters might not shine as much—still, it has a lot to offer!
I’ve been meaning to ask, does the game still feel like it drags at some points, like I heard? I’m worried that’ll turn me off.
It can be a bit of a slow burn, for sure. But if you stick with it, the payoff is rewarding. Just don’t give up too soon!
I absolutely love it! The story is rich in political themes, and the characters get good backstory, which adds depth. There is a bit of grinding, especially in the early desert areas, but the environments are so unique that it feels worthwhile. I’d honestly play it again just thinking about how much fun it is!
I’ve still got the original PS2 version. Is the Zodiac Age version really that different?
