I’m thinking about getting back into Final Fantasy XI after taking a break since 2014. Is it worth the effort to boot up the game again? Are the servers still active?

For sure, the PC version is still decently popular and the servers are up and running! The PS2 and Xbox 360 servers have been shut down, but it’s now easier to play than ever, and you should have no problem finding people to join you.
It really depends on what you’re wanting from the game. If you’re in it for the story, then yes, absolutely! Since you’ve played before, you’ll appreciate the new stories you missed. For endgame content, it’s more complicated. Retail and private servers like Horizon XI offer different experiences, and while both have active communities, Asura has the largest player base but can be a bit flooded with bots. Bahamut is a great alternative with a more genuine player experience but a smaller community.
Yeah, FFXI is definitely still active, and a lot of players are still around! You can play most of the game solo now, which is probably easier these days. The story content is fantastic—arguably some of the best in the series. The depth of the battle and job system means there’s an endless array of things to do, even if you’re just in it for the story. I’d recommend against private servers like Horizon XI, though; they lack some of the recent expansions and the full level cap compared to the retail version, so it might not be worth it if you’re looking for the complete experience.
