I just realized that Final Fantasy V has more female characters in the main cast than male characters, which seems pretty rare for the series. Most Final Fantasy games I can think of usually have a larger male presence among the main characters. Does anyone know if FFV is the only one like this? Are there other JRPGs that also feature a mainly female cast?

Final Fantasy XI has a significant focus on female characters too, especially in its expansions where many heroines take center stage. Plus, in XIV, there are quite a few key female characters leading the narrative throughout various expansions like ARR’s Minfilia and HW’s Ysayle.
You might want to also consider Final Fantasy X-2 in this conversation. It’s primarily a female cast, and FF13 has a pretty balanced roster, too. That said, X-2 often gets labeled as a side story, so it might not fully count as a mainline entry for some gamers.
Yeah, it’s odd how some sequels get excluded from the main lineup even if they have substantial content. It’s part of the whole debate over what counts as ‘mainline’.
It’s interesting to note that some games might seem balanced at first glance but really vary depending on how you categorize the characters. For example, both FFVIII and FFXII have even male and female characters in their parties, while FFXIII features a solid distribution too. It’s all about perspective!
And don’t forget the heads of the major city-states! They’re mostly female, which really stands out in that game!
