I just got a PS5 Pro and a PlayStation Portal to play Elden Ring. I’ve read that in performance mode, the game runs between 55 and 60 FPS, which sounds good to me. However, while playing, it feels like the game runs worse than expected. I’m worried something might be wrong with my console or my setup. Is this normal for Elden Ring on PS5 Pro, or should I be concerned that my console might not be working properly?

If you want rock-solid frame rates and don’t mind lower visuals, the PS4 version runs smoother generally, but the loading times are pretty long. So your choice to stick with the PS5 version makes sense if you want better graphics and shorter loading.
The base game generally hits those FPS numbers in quality mode, but performance mode tends to be a bit more stable with some dips during busy scenes. Plus, the DLC areas can be even more demanding, especially outdoors, so expect some frame drops there. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) can help smooth things out if your display supports it, but since you’re playing on the PlayStation Portal without VRR, that might explain why the performance feels choppier than expected.
That makes sense, my monitor doesn’t support VRR anyway, and as I’m playing on the Portal, VRR wouldn’t affect it. Maybe I got too used to my ROG Ally’s smoother but lower FPS.
Yeah, Elden Ring can be a bit rough performance-wise even on newer consoles. It’s known to have frame drops here and there, so what you’re experiencing is pretty common and not necessarily a sign that your console is faulty.
I figured the game’s got its quirks, but I was kinda hoping for smoother performance on the Pro.
If you just bought your PS5 Pro brand new from the official PlayStation store, it’s almost certainly running as intended. The issues you’re seeing are more likely from the game’s optimization rather than hardware problems.
Thanks, yeah it’s all fresh out of the box, just wanted to be sure I wasn’t missing something.
Make sure you’re not running ray tracing in performance mode because that can tank your frame rates. But since you mentioned you don’t have ray tracing on, that’s one less thing to worry about.
Yep, ray tracing is off for me to keep it smoother.
Yeah, I considered the PS4 version but those loading times are a dealbreaker for me.
