I’m building a PC mainly for gaming, productivity, and some engineering tasks. The specs I’m considering are a Ryzen 9 9950X3D, RTX 5090, 64GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 RAM, two 4TB PCIe 5.0 M.2 SSDs, and a 1200W 80+ Platinum PSU. I want to game at 1440p and am looking at either a 240Hz or 360Hz 27″ IPS monitor. Is the RTX 5090 overkill for 1440p? Would it be powerful enough to hit solid 120+ FPS on max settings at native 1440p and maybe 240 or even 360 FPS on competitive titles? Also, overall, does this build seem balanced for my mix of gaming and productivity?

Just to chime in on the 5090 at 1440p: some people get a bit overhyped by the numbers and think they’ll always max out crazy frame rates. While the card is beastly, in very demanding modern games maxed out at 1440p, hitting 360 FPS constantly might not be realistic. But 120-240 FPS stable? Absolutely, especially if you’re okay tweaking some settings in the toughest titles.
The RTX 5090 is definitely powerful, and for most games at 1440p, you’ll get superb performance. It can easily hit 120+ FPS on max settings in many titles, and for competitive games, you can push towards those 240Hz or even 360Hz refresh rates, depending on optimization. That said, the 5090 really shines at 4K, but it’s definitely not overkill for 1440p if you’re targeting those ultra-high refresh rates.
One quick thing — don’t stress too much about the PSU cables melting if you have a good quality 1200W 80+ Platinum unit. Just make sure your power cables are rated properly and plugged in securely, and you’ll be fine under heavy load.
I’ve been rocking an RTX 5080 and it handles 1440p gaming like a champ. The jump from 5080 to 5090 might bring some gains, but if your goal is mostly 1440p with high refresh rates, 5080-level performance is plenty. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D you picked pairs well too — really strong multi-thread and gaming performance. Overall, the build sounds well-rounded for gaming and heavy productivity.
Cool, so do you think a 360Hz monitor is worth it then? I’m wondering if I’ll actually see those frame rates in demanding games.
