Hey everyone! My Intel CPU just died, and after getting a refund, I’ve decided to check out AMD’s options. I’ve picked up a 9800x3D since it was restocked nearby, but I’m having some second thoughts about it. For now, I want to keep using my Zotac 3070 graphics card until I upgrade later. I do a variety of things on my PC like playing games (Counter-Strike, Tarkov, Inzoi, RDR2), video editing with Premiere and After Effects, 3D work with Blender, and I also produce music. I had pretty solid performance with my i7 13700k from the 13th gen and have heard amazing things about the 9800x3D, but I’m wondering if I’d really notice a significant performance boost compared to going with the 7800x3D instead. I haven’t opened any of the boxes yet, so returning everything is still an option. I just want to know if switching to the 9800x3D would enhance my experience significantly or if it’s simply overkill for my current setup and needs. I primarily game at 1080p.

Honestly, going with the 9800x3D feels like overkill for your setup. Something like the 7600x or 9600x would likely suffice for what you’re doing. The 9800x3D is really targeted at esports pros and hardcore enthusiasts, where you’re paying a premium just to get a few extra frames per second. Plus, with your 3070, you might hit a GPU bottleneck in many newer games, reducing the benefits of an upgrade to that CPU.
If your main goals are CS and Tarkov, the 9800x3D is still a bit excessive. If you want to save some cash and get great performance, the 9700x might be a better fit like others have mentioned. It can handle multitasking pretty well without breaking the bank.
What do you think about the 9700x option? Would that suit my needs better?
I do play esports titles and focus on rendering and music/video production. Would a 7600x give performance close to an i7?
