I’m considering using a USB 3.0 external SSD that hits around 350-450MB/s for running modern games like Cyberpunk, Last of Us, and Ghost of Tsushima. Is that speed sufficient for today’s gaming standards, or should I look for something faster?

Honestly, for gaming, the random 4K read speed is what really counts over just the linear speeds. Make sure to check that out!
Why not just grab a SATA SSD? It’s pretty much the same deal, just faster with more options. You can always use SATA-to-USB connectors if you want it portable. Just a thought!
I had a similar SSD and played games like Cyberpunk without issues. After upgrading to a super-fast SSD (about 4000MB/s), the load times were a game changer. If you’re okay with a bit slower loads, stick with what you have, but an upgrade would really improve the experience!
That speed should hold up, but sometimes you might notice textures loading a bit slowly. If you have access to an SSD that can hit around 1GB/s with a USB-C port, go for that. Otherwise, you should be fine.
Definitely! That speed should be sufficient for most games right now. Game engines usually don’t read files faster than around 400MB/s anyway. Microsoft is working on solutions like Direct Storage, but we’re not there yet. So for now, you’re good to go!
Thanks! I think I’ll store some older games on it, like Ghost of Tsushima and Battlefield.
