Hey everyone! I’m a returning player and it feels like I’m brand new since it’s been so long. I’ve tried out almost all the roles in the game and currently have a level 80 Warrior (I640), Druid (I636), and Shaman (620). I’m really leaning towards healing or tanking, as DPS just doesn’t excite me anymore.
However, I’ve noticed that Mythic+ dungeons seem to be quite a jump in difficulty, especially since I’m not familiar with the TWW S2 dungeons or their mechanics. I managed to clear my first M2 Rookery easily enough, but that was with a healer who was super helpful. Other +2 runs haven’t gone as well, with some players quitting after a few deaths, even though my Druid’s DPS was the highest.
I’m looking for advice on how to learn the routes and mechanics without just relying on YouTube tutorials since I believe I learn best by actually doing. Should I start with tanking or healing? Or am I better off picking a DPS class for now, knowing I want to eventually transition to tanking or healing? I really liked my Elemental Shaman, but I want to find a class to focus on to get a solid understanding of the game. Thanks for any help! I’m loving being back in WoW and, despite the challenges, my past M+ experiences have been pretty positive with helpful players around!

If you’re looking for a group, my guild often runs dungeons and we’re always welcoming new players. The vibe is casual, and there’s no pressure to perform perfectly. We usually run keys in the afternoons CST, so you could join and just learn! You can also hop onto our Discord, and we can guide you through it without any stress.
You’ve got a couple of paths you can follow here. One option is to try DPSing on your tank for a while to gear up while observing how other tanks handle their keys. Use that to learn the ropes! On the flip side, you can just dive in and learn as you go, despite the mistakes you’ll probably make. Everyone starts somewhere, and you’ll pick up important lessons along the way. Just stay open to feedback – not all criticism is bad, and some tough comments can have valuable insights mixed in. Good luck!
I think you should consider healing on your Shaman first. It can be a bit more forgiving, and you can quickly pick up gear in LFR. Going for a few M2s today and then progressively working your way up to M4s might be a good plan. Once you get comfortable with the healing mechanics and see how the dungeons operate, you can figure out if you want to continue healing or switch to tanking later on. Trust me, Resto Shaman is super effective, and it might be the fastest way to progress!
I totally get your concern! Yes, you’ll need some guidance or to look up routes in the beginning since jumping into higher difficulty dungeons without knowing the mechanics is tough. You could always run the +2 dungeons as DPS and stick close to a tank, which might give you a better feel for things. A lot of players who have more experience might not agree with me, but that’s just my laid-back take on it. Just remember, have fun with it!
Yeah, it can be overwhelming! Just remember, with some practice, you’ll get the hang of it. Focus on having fun!
Tanking does indeed come with a lot to learn, but I wouldn’t say one role is easier than the others. Each has its challenges. If you’re keen on tanking, I think a great way to get familiar with dungeons is to watch what seasoned tanks do, then tweak their strategies to suit your own playstyle and your group’s strengths. Also, consider checking out Quazii’s guides for in-depth knowledge—they’ve got some awesome resources. Practicing routes by running normal or heroic dungeons can help too! Just remember to shake off any negativity from other players; everyone has been a beginner at some point.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I’m definitely all about casual play and just want to enjoy tanking or healing eventually. The leap from heroic to mythic feels pretty intense, but I’ll keep practicing!
