Hey everyone! I’m in a bit of a bind here. My two friends and I have hit a wall while facing Myrkul at the end of Act 2. We just lost our ninth attempt on Honor Mode, and it’s really disheartening. Up till Myrkul, we were feeling great after taking out all the necromites, intellect devourers, and even Ketheric. We thought we were finally on the right track.
But once Myrkul entered the scene, it completely turned around. We geared up with potions of angelic slumber and gave it our all before finishing Ketheric, but within just three rounds, we were wiped out. His retaliation ability combined with the endless necromite spawns makes it feel impossible. I’m looking for any strategies or tips on how to tackle this fight better. What should we do to secure a win?

You really need a solid tank for this fight. Aim for someone with at least 25 AC to absorb Myrkul’s hits and trigger that retaliation. Level 10 should be your target. Plus, summoning pets can soak up any necromite spawns to lighten your load.
One tactic that really helped me was casting darkness on Myrkul. Initially, I struggled too, but after doing that, the fight became way more manageable. Also, if you can manage some checks, you can skip fighting Ketheric altogether—he’ll just off himself!
While skipping Ketheric isn’t always the best idea (since he’s easier than Myrkul), make sure to take out the mind flayer first. It’s essential to deal with him before facing Myrkul!
Does that darkness tactic mess with his Gaze of the Dead or Finger of Death attacks? I tried tanking him with high AC, but it didn’t work out for me.
Here’s my strategy that I’ve been using:
1. First, summon Scratch and switch to turn-based mode. Make everyone, including Scratch, invisible.
2. Position your characters close to Ketheric’s starting spot without triggering the cut scene.
3. Have your tank initiate combat and take down the Illithid first—this will trigger Ketheric’s dialogue to end the cut scene.
4. When Myrkul shows up, you’ll get a surprise round! Attack him hard and fast. I’ve noticed that attacks with lightning damage do wonders, especially smite spells.
That’s a great strategy! But just to note, my friends are pretty new to the game and I want them to experience the story authentically. I let one of them lead during the Shadowfell, and well… Aylin didn’t make it out.
I managed to pull off the fight with Minthara as a throwing-barbarian from a tower I built pre-combat. I focused on Myrkul while my other chars handled his minions. Surprisingly, his attacks didn’t knock me off! It was still a tough fight but managed to keep my HP full until the end!
I asked my group if they wanted to go full cheese with the strategies, but they prefer to keep it legit. I thought the tower tactic was a bit much, but I’m considering using everything I can think of for our next attempt!
We were super close to hitting level 10! I thought that was our key, but we fell 2000 XP short. One friend had 115 HP and an AC of 23, so we thought we’d be fine. I had 22 and 24 AC myself.
